# Veil

**A Windows browser that forgets everything when you close it.**

Blocks ads and trackers, offers a clean reading experience, and requires no account.

## How to download and open

1. Click **Download** and download the `Veil-1.2.1-windows-x64.zip` file.

2. Open your Downloads folder, right-click the file, and select **Extract all**.

3. Open the extracted folder and double-click **Veil.exe**. Do not run it directly from the zip file; it won't work that way.

No installation required. To remove Veil, simply delete the folder.

### Did a "Windows protected your PC" message appear?

This is normal the first time: the program lacks a paid digital signature. Click **More info** and then **Run anyway**.

## Features

- **Private session:** history, cookies, and cache vanish when you close the browser.

- **Ad and tracker blocker:** covers around 72,000 domains. Can be toggled on or off.

- **Reader mode:** presents a clean article view, free from menus and ads.

- **Download manager:** pause, resume, and open the download folder. Alerts you before downloading programs (.exe and similar).

- **Lightweight mode:** uses fewer resources while gaming; tabs playing music keep running.

- **Secure DNS and proxy:** choose Cloudflare, Quad9, or Mullvad, or use an SOCKS5/HTTP proxy.

- **Unpacked Chrome extensions** (limited functionality).

- **Choose your search engine:** DuckDuckGo, Google, Bing, Brave, Startpage, or Ecosia.

- Memory (RAM) usage indicator in the toolbar and tabs that hibernate when idle. ---

## Important to know

- Works only on **64-bit Windows**.

- **It is not a VPN.** The proxy affects only Veil's traffic, and secure DNS does not hide your IP address.

- No bookmarks, saved passwords, or synchronization. This is intentional.

- Does not block in-video ads, such as those on YouTube.

- To use an extension, add it via the extensions button, then close and reopen Veil.

- No automatic updates yet. When a new version is released, download it again here.

- It is a new project with limited testing. Do not use it for tasks requiring maximum security.

## Privacy

Veil has no accounts, ads, or data collection, and sends nothing to its own servers. The websites you visit and your chosen search engine have their own policies.

Built with Electron. The blocklist comes from StevenBlack/hosts (MIT license).
